Chronic Disease: The Body's Warning Signal

One of the most transformative analogies I found in my own journey of managing chronic disease is that of the body being a vehicle with its own quirks, mishaps, and warning signals. We all have various vehicles, and each one acts a little differently. And, just like a vehicle, our bodies will develop various breakdowns and maintenance needs. The question is, what do we do when those breakdowns hit? How do we handle it?

I was in conversation with a good friend yesterday and she mentioned something that is all too common in today's society: we are wired to reach for a cure--a magic pill, a miraculous treatment, something that helps us overcome the breakdown with the least amount of personal effort.

Have you felt the grief of a diagnosis that comes with news that there's no cure? This is all too common with autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. There's no magic pill that will make it all go away.

So, what are we left to do?

Do we throw in the towel, wallow in victimhood, and get caught in loops of self-loathing?

Or, do we utilize our diagnosis as a warning signal pointing to areas in our lives that need attention?

Just like the check engine light, these various diseases can point us to aspects of our lifestyle that might be contributing to the body's breakdown. The journey towards optimizing what we can through adapting our lifestyles is the slow, often painstaking journey that requires taking responsibility to upgrade what we can and accept what we must.

Healing in a community, even if that community is one other trusted person, supporting you through the process with compassionate care can make a huge difference in restoring quality of life. Over the next three posts, we will explore some of the various aspects of healing that can help clear up some of the muddiness surrounding these challenging chronic diseases.

When we become aware of societal conditioning, various expectations we have, and chronic patterns that keep us stuck, then we open the door to gaining knowledge and experimenting with various tools and techniques that will give our bodies a chance to heal from the inside out.
