Paradoxes of Energy

Namaste!
I have recently been contemplating on the paradoxes of energy. What do I mean by this? Well, everything we do requires energy output. Even resting and sleeping gives the body a chance to continue to work on inner restoration. And yet, we know that when we expend energy in certain ways, we either feel drained or more energized.
This reminds me of the idea that the more we give, the more we receive. When we move our bodies, we expend energy. At the same time, our bodies respond in ways that enhance our endorphins and adrenaline which ultimately increases our overall energy, focus, and capacity to function. One comment I have made many times in my career is, “the more you lay around because you feel tired, the more tired you will feel. But, if we get up and move around, even just a little, it stimulates our brain to pull us out of lethargy.” Oh, the looks I received from the patients, but the next day they would report that what I said was true!
So, how can we spend our energy wisely so as to ensure a return on our investment? One of the first ways has already been mentioned-moving our bodies and stimulating our muscles to function, our hearts to pump, and our lungs to expand. It doesn't have to be much. We don't have to kill ourselves off at the gym unless we enjoy that. A walk around the block, dancing to your favorite song, or doing a little Tai Chi or Yoga can offer an energy boost that is far beyond the energy used.
Another way we can maximize our energy output is through taking the time to cook nourishing plant-centered foods at home. Yes, there is the prep time, the cooking time, and the clean up. It can be a daunting task. And yet, I’m sure you know how you feel after eating a favorite homecooked meal vs going to your closest fast food restaurant. I know my body offers me so much more energy when I’m eating healthy home cooked meals.
Ever felt the excitement of getting a project done or working on a creative pursuit? Again, these activities require energy while at the same time infusing our lives with an abundance of energy in return. It really is amazing the difference I feel when I’m connecting with activities that support my creative expression. It’s a natural high that no other instant gratification pursuit can supply. When I find those aha moments in my writing or in my free expression, I am infused with amazement, wonder, and deep gratitude, knowing I am connecting with a source of energy far greater than myself.
Another critical aspect is setting ourselves up for success when it comes to sleep. Recognizing the paradox of energy in reverse can help us understand the importance of getting rest to allow our bodies to heal and recover from the day. Despite our lack of outward exertion, our bodies go into restore and repair mode when we enter into deep sleep. Life is so chaotic these days, and it seems to only be getting busier and more crammed with obligations. Taking time to prioritize our sleep can ultimately support our body’s ability to push through the daily tasks with greater ease.
These are a few ways the paradoxes of energy are showing up for me. I would love to hear what ways you find your own infusion of energy, awe and wonder in your daily lives!
